History and Introduction
To cater for the need of the sick and ailing community of the Northern Pak-India Subcontinent a Medical College was established in 1860 and was named as “Lahore Medical College”. It was established in the artillery barracks to start with, at the present site of Government College University, Lahore. The hospital was located in a stable near the present Tibbi Police Station, Taxali Gate, Lahore. Dr. J.B. Sceiven of General Hospital, Calcutta was nominated as the founder principal.
In 1916 a grandeur double storied building named as ‘Bahawalpur Block’ was erected for accommodating Physiology and Community Medicine Departments.
After partition of 1947 the departments of Bio-Chemistry and Physiology were ably lead by the following Professors;
Prof. Shujaat Ali, Prof. M.A Baseer, Prof. Abdul Ghaffar, Prof. Alamdar Hussain, Prof.Aziz Ahmad Khan, Prof. Nusrat Waqar, Prof. Shahnaz Javed Khan, & Prof. Muhammad Akram.
Since October 2010, Dr. Mehr un Nisa Associate Professor is the Head of the Physiology Department. Rest of the faculty consists of:-

After October 2010 dynamic changes, as were envisaged long ago were quickly undertaken summary of which is as below:
RENOVATIONS
Massive renovation of the laboratories and office rooms as was highly needed was immediately undertaken with the timely support of Prof. Asad Aslam Khan, Vice Chancellor, KEMU.
The experimental lab, the post-graduate research lab, the conference room and the library room were totally revamped.
KEMCAANA (King Edward Medical College Alumni Association of North America) was approached to help, by donating machinery & equipments for the under-graduate and post-graduate research labs, and they have promised a great deal of help.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY TEACHING
Research skills would be introduced in the first year MBBS, at very introductory levels, so the students can access the internet and consult latest Journals articles on the subject, and keep pace with the latest trends in the field of Physiology.
ACTIVE RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Research methodologies are being introduced at very basic undergraduate level but active research is being carried at the post-graduate level in parallel programs and under graduates who have an interest are co-opted in the studies.
The following research is being undertaken at the department currently under the supervision of the Head of the Department:-
- Brain stem auditory evoked potential in diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Javed Hassan
- Role of intravenous Magnesium Sulphate in acute severe attack of asthma.
Dr. Shahid Saeed
- Comparison of EEG findings, Prolactin and CPK levels in Grand Mal Epilepsy and pseudo seizures.
Dr. Avais Ahmad
- Comparison of estimation of Hb by Sahli’s Method & Automated Method.
Dr. Mehr un Nisa.
- FEV1 / FEV Ratio in young adults with parental history of asthma.
Dr. Mehr un Nisa
- Role of brain naturetic peptide BNP in diagnosis of inducible stable angina pectoris.
Dr. Ansar Asrar
- The effect of exercise on arterial blood gases in asymptomatic asthmatic patients.
Dr. Qamar Mahbood
- Association of BMI with glucose intolerance lipid profile and plasma cortisol level in patients of PCOS.
Dr Tahira Rasheed
.
ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT BY INTERGRATED TEACHING
This new system of integrated teaching comprises of applied knowledge in which the students are taught basic subjects , which is later on followed by clinically oriented teaching sessions so as to explain the clinical application of the basic knowledge attained. The aim is to make the knowledge palatable and interesting for the students, and give them a flavor of patient care which is their future objective.
TEACHING METHODOLOGIES
The teaching and training programs are also being stream lined. Four teams have been made amongst the teaching staff, each being lead by a senior faculty member, to undertake lectures, practicals, seminar and tutorials. Frequent student teacher interaction is being encouraged. Post-graduate students of M.Phil. & Ph.D. are being given opportunities to sharpen their teaching and communication capabilities by encouraging supervised teaching to under-graduates.
UNDER GRADUATE TEACHING PROGRAMMES
The following under-graduate teaching programmes are being catered:
- MBBS 1st & 2nd Year of the five years programme
- BDs 1st year of their four years teaching programme
- Doctorate in Physiotherapy (DPT) 1st & 2nd year of five years teaching programme.
- DPT 1st year of four years teaching programme.
- 1st Module of the Allied Health Sciences Graduate Programme.
- 1st Basic Module of Ophthalmic Technician 2year programme
POST- GRADUATE TEACHING PROGRAMMES
The following post graduate courses are being conducted in the Physiology Deptt.
- MPhil leading to PhD in physiology, 5 scholars enrolled for the current session.
- MPhil Physiology 4 years programme 3 Scholars working on their theses, after completing their part I
- PhD in Physiology, one scholar already M.Phil degree holder is working on her thesis for PhD.
OTHER POST- GRADUATE TEACHING PROGRAMMES
The following programmes of various subjects come to this department for their basic modules or part one of their studies:
- MD/ MDS
- MS
- MPhil leading to PhD
- Diploma Courses
PARADIGMN SHIFT IN LEARNING PROCEDURES
The paradigm of learning was shifted from book cramming to practical, clinical oriented learning. With the students let free to consult any reference book or surf internet to clear their concepts and sharpen their clinical acumen. The emphasis was to lay a strong and firm foundation of physicians / surgeons of tomorrow who would very deeply understand the basic patho physiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease, which was not possible without the concepts being clear at the basic levels.
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING. (PBL) ACTIVITIES
Problem-based learning as an effective, efficient and innovative way of learning and teaching physiology which has been introduced in this department since the beginning of this academic year.
It helps to explore experience and learn different strategies for enhancing the understanding of physiology; and finally, to determine strategies that would attract scientists to a teaching career in basic sciences.
Problem-based learning has tremendous advantages; therefore, it has been blended with standard teaching of medical students. They are participating actively in these learning sessions. The teaching staff conducting these PBL sessions is being trained in this teaching methodology.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Several sport events have been organized and students have opportunity to display their talents in the fields of football, throw ball, basketball and cricket etc. Special attention is being given the female students for indoor games.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Physiology Dept is given the responsibility for the first year MBBS. Social evenings are regularly conducted, where students are given opportunities to exhibit their talent, in extracurricular activities. The students organize small skits, sing, poetry, bazam e naat, speeches etc are conducted regularly
FUTURISTIC PLANS
The students who get admitted into the KEMU at under-graduate and post-graduate level are at the top of merit at intermediate and graduate levels. They have the spark which needs to be ignited. We are preparing to polish the capabilities of the students through the following means:-
INTRANET DIGITAL NETWORKING LIBRARY
Digital Network Library would be established with 25 work stations. This state of the art library will enable the students and the faculty members to update knowledge by having access to medical journals and text books.
STATE OF THE ART DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY
The Library room has been renovated and wooden shelves have been ordered which would be an ideal place for under-graduate and post-graduate students for consultation of books and preparation of lectures, research papers and studies. More than 1,000 books relating to the subject is being procured along with subscription for latest journals and magazines.
- CONDUCTION OF WORKSHOPS FOR TOT
The teachers are being given training on computer courses and teachers are sent out station for attending these workshops, seminars and conferences. This is the Training of Teachers program.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES WITH THE HELP OF POWER LABS
Power labs are being procured for the under graduate and post graduate students to perform and learn.
