Brief
History and Introduction
`The present famous Mayo Hospital, was completed in 1870 and was opened in 1871. In the same year a “Hakim Class” was introduced for people with some knowledge of “ Unani System” with emphasis on Anatomy and Surgery. In 1883, as the number of students increased , an additional Professor for the chair of Materia Medica (now known as Pharmacology ) & Pathology was appointed. The training classes for the ward boys and compounders were introduced in 1894 and 1901 respectively. During 1906-11,the chemicals examiner vacated several rooms on his departure from the college. Hence a separate department of Materia Medica was established. In 1935, the Principal of this prestigious institute. Nelson Harper emphasized for construction of Pharmacology building and hence Pharmacology emerged as a separate department in 1937.
Prof. Col. Rai was crowned as the first head of the department. Later on Prof. Amir Chand assumed the responsibilities as the second head of the Pharmacology department.
Then the renowned physician Col, Ilahi Bukhsh headed the department from
1937 to 1947. During this period, Pharmacy department of the Punjab University, Lahore started working in K.E.Medical College, which later on shifted back to its original Alma mater in 1950.
After partition the following eminent professors rendered their meritorious services as head of the department.

Pharmacology& Therapeutics as a subject acts as a foundation stone on which the entire clinical empire is constructed. Researches in the subject of pharmacology pave the new approaches and trends towards the clinical uses and their implementation on the sobbing humanities , the patients.
The department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics is the oldest one comprising of nine offices, laboratories for pharmacy & experimental Pharmacology (one each) and a spacious lecture theatre accommodating more than 200 students.
The department is actively involved in teaching of MBBS since the day of its emergence. The BDS 2nd year class of de,Montmorency college of Dentistry is attached to the department for last 76 years. Classes of the nurses and dispensers were also conduceted in the department as well.
On the part of extra curricular activities, the undergraduate students are assigned various topics to prepare charts or mountings for presentations. Special assignments are also given to prepare a note book comprising of updated treatments for 25-30 common diseases.
In order to keep our teachers abreast with the modern trends in the subject, journal club meeting is being held once a week, in which doctors present research papers related to the techniques & methodology of the experimental pharmacology of the fields of their interests.
The head of the department apart from teaching is also involved in miscellaneous activities like member of university purchase committee, in charge university auditorium, and formulating the curricula (MBBS & M.Phil) and Essential Drugs List.
POSTGRADUATE CLASSES & RESEARCH PROJECTS
With the up lifting of KEMC to KEMU in 2006, different postgraduate classes and research projects have been started.The department of pharmacology has commendable and pivotal role in teaching the basic modules of all postgraduate degree courses (MD, MS& M.Phil), postgraduate diplomas and doctor of physiotherapy.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT.
The year 2009 can be termed as the period of physical development of the department. Extensive renovations / repair works of the whole department is accomplished and the department now bears an entire new look. It is all made possible in record time by the special attention and keen interest of Ex-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Zafar Ullah Khan.
