Brief
History and Introduction
The Department
of Paediatric Surgery was created at King Edward Medical College
/ Mayo Hospital, Lahore in 1979 with a small nucleus of six beds
in the Paediatric Medical ward and four beds in chest surgical ward.
The department moved into its present premises in 1981. This building
project was initiated in 1978 with a generous donation of 10 lacs
rupees by the late Professor Ameer ud din Professor Emeritus for
starting a Paediatric Surgical Unit at King Edward Medical College
/ Mayo Hospital, Lahore.
The Department has 102 Paediatric Surgical beds including 24 beds
for burn patients, 10 beds for intensive care and 12 beds of Surgical
Neonatology, Neonatology is equipped with incubators, baby therm,
a ventilator and other monitoring facilities. Subsequently another
block has been added to the main building. The construction of this
block started in 1992 and was completed in 1996. It houses two operation
theatres, ICU, Nursery and emergency ward. There is central supply
of gases and suction in this building. In 1995 a lift was installed
in the main block.
The interior has been recently renovated with private donations
and electomedical equipment including a laparoscope, and a flexible
sigmoid scope, has also been procured from donations. A Bronchoscope
has been acquired from the Mayo Hospital this year.
The Department shares with the Paediatric Medicine Radiological
and Laboratory facilities. It has created its own Departmental Library
and a Pathology Museum. It provides round the clock emergency cover
seven days a week in addition to an outpatient and inpatient service.
Academic activities include teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate
students. Since recognition of Paediatric Surgery as a separate
surgical specialty, 19 postgraduate students have been trained and
passed FCPS examination and four are at various stages of training.
It has developed a programme for M.S. Paediatric Surgery and at
present 10 students are at various levels of training of MS programme
in Paediatric Surgery. It houses the secretariat of the Federation
of the Association of Paediatric Surgeons in SAARC countries. The
Department has many research projects being carried out.

A society has been formed for providing assistance to the deserving
patients with pecuniary embarrassment. It provides assistance for
treatment particularly provision of artificial limbs to amputees
and help to burn patients.
