Brief
History & Introduction
North Medical Unit is the latest addition in the medical department
of Mayo hospital. It was created in 1970. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali was
its first unit head. At present this unit is headed by Prof. Dr.
Irshad Hussain who joined this ward on 27/12/2008. At present it
has 60 beds. 29 postgraduate trainees and 34 house officers are
working in this unit. At present there are 5 senior registrars and
1 Assistant professor.
The unit handles medical emergency patients 36 hours a week and
offers outpatient services twice a week.

House officers and postgraduate students for FCPS, MRCP and MD are
taught at the beside, on rounds and in clinical meeting on a daily
basis. An elaborate teaching program has raised the merit of the
unit form number 4 to 2 amongst the house officers in the recent
selection. A regular postgraduate teaching program is carried out
with structured training towards higher examinations. A variety
of books and journals are available on line. They are encouraged
to use the guidelines for medical management of emergency and admitted
cases which has been developed by the unit.

Following is the list of research projects currently ongoing in
the North Medical Ward
• Comparison of complications and short term mortality between
occult diabetes and stress glycemia in patients with acute coronary
syndrome. (Dr. Naeem SR)
• Frequency of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with electrocardiographic
left ventricular hypertrophy. (Dr. Zubair PGR)
• Frequency of Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in patients
of liver cirrhosis with hypoalbuminemia. (Dr. Sajjad PGR)
• Prevalence of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease in
patients of ischemic CVA. (Dr. Shafqat PGR)
• Sensitivity of pleural biopsy in the diagnosis of tuberculous
pleural effusion. (Dr. M. Farooq PGR)
Services
The North Medical Ward regular care of out patients twice a week
and. 36 hours emergency on call once a week. There is a 1 in 4 Rota
of special Sunday emergency on call.
1. Acute medical and out patients admission are managed.
2. State of the art endoscopic facilities are available.
3. Regular upper and lower GI endoscopies are carried out twice
weekly.
4. Procedures like sclerotherapy and band legation are carried out
as necessary.
5. The unit not only caters for its admitted and out patients but
entertains call for other departments.
6. Regular teaching is carried during these procedures to the attending
PG and house officer on duty in the section.
7. Bronchoscopy is carried off in patients on demand basis.
Learning Facilities
The ward is provided with following learning facilities:
• A Computer Lab having 3 PC’s with internet connection
provided by KEMCANA.
• One laptop is also available for preparing lectures for
PG’s. (Multimedia will also be available soon)
• There is a ward library equipped with all the major medical
books and major journals.
