Brief History and Introduction

Neurosurgery department was established in 1966 by Prof. Bashir Ahmad. Only four beds was sanctioned in Mayo Hospital, Lahore but main indoor facilities and equipment were paced in Lahore General Hospital. Prof. Iftikhar Ali Raja shifted one unit of neurosurgery from Lahore General Hospital to Mayo Hospital in November 1999. At that time we had one ICU (5 beds) one male ward (10 beds) one Female ward (10 beds) on the second floor of block. Two rooms in OPD, one for Professor, second for Junior Consultants.

One elective operation theatre with two table, both with facilities of GA.. We are taking round the clock emergency and performing three elective operation lists, we have two admission days in a week. About six months ago the department beds were placed in different wards so at present we have no proper ward & ICU. The patients are scattered in ten wards. This department admits over 1200 patients per year and perform about 600 surgeries in a year which include head and Spine injuries, Brain, & Spine tumors. Aneurysm clipping, excision of AVM, functional Neurosurgery, surgical procedure for brain & spine tuberculosis, Transnasal procedures for pituitary tumor, trans-oral procedures for congenital anamalies and for degenerative diseases of cervical and lumber spine. All kind of spinal procedures are carried out in the department. We expect that work load will grow at a faster rate because of increasing traffic on the GT Road and developing net work of motor ways.
Presently we have research work on complication of posterior fossa surgery and surgical approaches for odontoid pathologies. We have two teaching round and one clinicopathological conferences for the PG students. Once a week Neurosurgeons, neurologists and Radiologist, meet for the neuro radiology meeting.
