History
The
subject of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology
was taught at undergraduate level before partition,
but no regular teacher was posted/available before
1973. A part time teacher designated as surgeon
medicolegal West Pakistan/Punjab used to deliver
the lectures. The first regular teacher in the
department at KEMC was Prof. Nasib R. Awan who
joined in 1973 as a demonstrator, promoted to
Assist. Prof in 1975 and resumed as founder Prof.
in 1979. Initially the department was housed in
a small room in Patiala block with only five staff
members i.e. One Assist. Prof. with two demonstrators,
one attendant and one sweeper. With continuous,
persistent and untiring efforts of Prof. Nasib
R. Awan for improving and upgrading the existing
arrangements, the department from a single mortuary
site has flourished to attain the present status.
Now the department is staffed with one Professor,
Two Associate Professors, Four Assistant Professors,
eighteen Demonstrators, Four Medical Technologist
and the establishment consisting of Stenographer,
attendants, Accountant, Junior Clerks, Naib Qasid
as well as necessary paramedical staff including
Artist, Modeler, Photographer, Radiographer, Museum
keeper, Morticians etc.
Until
1983 the autopsies were supervised and conducted
by the office of surgeon medico legal Punjab,
Lahore. At the end of year 1983 the autopsy work
for the District Lahore was authorized to Dept
of Forensic Medicine KEMC. In 1999 the responsibility
of medico legal work done at A & E department
Mayo Hospital, Lahore was also shifted to this
department.
At
present the purpose built building of the department
is double storied with separate entry and exit
for the public, police and medical students.
