Brief History & Introduction

As old as Mayo Hospital itself, East Medical Ward is the unit-1 of department of medicine being headed by Prof. Dr. Tahira Murtaza Cheema, Head Department of Medicine & Head of East Medical Unit-I, King Edward Medical University, Lahore.

Patient Services


The unit handles medical emergency patients 36 hours a week and offers outpatient services twice a week.
The ward has two wings. Male wing has 23 beds extendable to 35. The female wing has 21 beds extendable up to 30. The ward offers multiple services, most of which are run on self help basis. During the year 2010, 41225 patients were admitted and treated in the ward.

  • Endoscopy section providing facilities for Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, ERCP. During year 2010, 2137 patients undergone gastroscopy, 289 patients undergone colonoscopy and 14 patients undergone ERCP.  Being the official unit for endoscopy, these services are available for all patients coming to Mayo Hospital on minimal charges.
  • Gastroenterology & Hepatitis clinic run by a Specialist Gastroenterologist was started in January 2010 in OPD Block, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. 3570 patients have been attended from January 2010 to December 2010.
  • Intensive care unit has been set up with two ventilators, six beds and a free supply of most emergency medicines & equipments. During last one year 70 patients have been provided with ventilatory support. 30 patients were benefited with temporary pace maker.
  • Diabetic Clinic is a prestigious outpatient outlet of our department and deals with major bulk of diabetic patients visiting Mayo Hospital, Lahore, with provision of free medicines. During year 2010, 42405 patients visited Diabetic OPD out of which 32672 were provided insulin injections free of cost.
  • Ultrasonography & echocardiography facilities are available for admitted patients of this ward free of cost.  
  • Hemodialysis unit hosts four hemodialysis machines and shares the major part of the load on Mayo Hospital. These services are provided free of cost with the support of Hope Kidney Foundation. During the year 2010, 425 patients were provided the facility of hemodialysis.
  • Laboratory providing routine investigations for admitted patients of this ward.

Training Courses / Workshops

East Medical Ward contributes to postgraduate education directly by organizing multiple intensive courses on yearly basis e.g. 2ND Postgraduate course in Gastroenterology & Hepatology was held from 29th – 30th April, 2011 and 20th Annual Course on Diabetes Mellitus was held from 13th – 14th June, 2011 in Auditorium of King Edward Medical University, Lahore.


Internet Library

The research and academic setup of this ward is well reputed. We host our own LAN (local area network) with internet facility sponsored by KEMCAANA. All possible services are available related to data collection and interpretation. Our doctors are well versed with computers and make maximum use of the available services.
Our library/reading room hosts assess to maximum number of books and review articles on computer and internet.
