EAST MEDICAL WARD

Brief History & Introduction

As old as Mayo Hospital itself, East Medical Ward is the unit I of department of medicine being headed by Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University & Allied Hospitals, Lahore, Prof. Dr. M. Zafar Ullah Khan. It hosts state of the art academic facilities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At present, 20 postgraduate doctors are completing their training in this unit.

The unit handles medical emergency patients 36 hours a week and offers outpatient services twice a week.

The ward has 44 beds extendable up to 65. The ward offers multiple services, most of which are run on self help basis as follows:

1. Laboratory providing routine investigations for admitted patients

2. Endoscopy section providing facilities for:

a. Bronchoscopy
b. Gastroscopy
c. Colonoscopy
d. Rigid sigmoidoscopy
e. ERCP

Being the official unit for endoscopy, these services are available for all patients coming to Mayo Hospital on minimal charges.

3. Ultrasonography & echocardiography are available for admitted patients of this ward free of cost.

4. Hemodialysis unit hosts four hemodialysis machines and shares the major part of the load on Mayo Hospital. These services are provided free of cost with the support of Hope Kidney Foundation.

5. Diabetic Clinic is a prestigious outpatient outlet of our department and deals with major bulk of diabetic patients visiting Mayo Hospital.

The research and academic setup of this ward is well reputed. We host our own LAN (local area network) with internet facility. All possible services are available related to data collection and interpretation. Out doctors are well versed with computers and make maximum use of the available services.

Our library/reading room hosts assess to maximum number of books and review articles on computer and internet.

East Medical Ward contributes to postgraduate education directly by organizing multiple intensive courses on yearly basis e.g. Annual Course on Diabetes Mellitus & Postgraduate Training Course on the diseases of chest and heart.

Services

• Patients admission, discharge and expiry record is maintained on register and their management and daily progress notes are maintained on separate charts of each patient. There charts are kept with us after discharge / expiry of patients.
