Brief History and Introduction

The Department of Anaesthesia is as old as the department of surgery. After independence Dr. Rustam Ali Nabi joined King Edward Medical College on 9.02.1948. He reported to Dr. K. Madan who was the anaesthetist at Mayo Hospital. In November 1948 Dr. Rustam Ali Nabi (along with Dr. Hameed Sheikh, Pathologist and Dr. Bilqees Fatima, Gynaecologist) was amongst the first three Pakistani doctors to proceed to England for postgraduate training (diploma in Anaesthesia). He returned from England on 6th February1951 and was confirmed as an Anaesthetist at King Edward Medical College, on 24.05.1951.

The first Chair in Anasthesia in whole of Pakistan (at that time east and west Pakistan) was created at King Edward Medical College in November 1959. Dr. Rustam Ali Nabi took charge as Professor of Aneasthesia. On 25th November 1959 and retired in October 1974. He was succeeded by Prof. Shafique ud din Ahmed Khan October 1974 and retired on 31.12.1980. Dr. Awais Qudsia Qureshi, Associate Professor officiated as Head of Department of anaesthesia from January 1981 to 1.09.1982. When Prof. Abdul Hameed took over the Department. He retired in December 2002. At present Dr. Abdul Qayyum is heading the Anaesthesia Unit-I since December 2000 after the retirement of Prof. A Hameed Ch..

Postgraduate Programme

The postgraduate teaching involves the supervision of candidates preparing for F.C.P.S. M.C.P.S., M.S. and D.A. courses in Anaesthesia. The objective is to:

• Conduct and supervise research projects.
• Trainee residents in pre-operative planning and rounds.
• Trainee residents in preoperative care.
• Teach end of case discussion.
• Teach Postoperative care and pain management.

Undergraduate programme

These departments organizes didactic lecture for the fourth year and final year students of King Edward Medical University.

Research Project

• Comparison of nalbuphone and midazolam on the cardiovascular response to laryngoscopy and intubations.
• Comparison of propacetamol with pethidine for postoperative pain relief.

2. Effects of spinal anaesthesia on homodynamic in patients with cardiovascular disease.
3. Effect of ephedrine on onset of vecuronum.
4. Haemodynamic characteristics of Ketamine alongwith Proposal as TIVA in short surgical procedures.
5. Changes in pulse pressure during laryngoscopy and intubations in females of different age groups.
6. The effect of age and operative site on duration of caudal amalgesia in children
7. Propofol and subanaesthetic ketamine in combination as a technique of TIVA for short procedures.
8. Incidence of sore throat after inflation of enelotracheal tube cuff with llignocaine.
9. Effect of subanesthetic dose of ketamine on haemodymanic respouse to larynagoscopy and intubations
10. End tidal carbon dioxide tension during laprosscopic cholecystectomy correlation with base line prior to insufflations..

Services

The Department of Anaesthesia provides 24 hours coverage to the Emergency operation theatres of all specialties and the Intensive Care Unit in the hospital. The personnel’s also provide cover for Elective Surgical Procedures carried out in the following operation theatres:
